History
The first Mount Gambier Winter Steeplechase was held near the town centre on 2 July 1879 in the paddocks of Mr H Williams.
A few years later, a company of sporting gentlemen formed the Mount Gambier Racing Club Committee and held their first steeplechase which coincided with the public opening of the Glenburnie Racecourse on 4 July 1883. More than 3,500 people attended this inaugural meet.
Recently, the Club inducted its first members into the Legends Hall of Fame:
- Mr Andrew Laurie – Official and Administrator
- Mr HC (Dick) Campbell – Trainer
- Mr Bill Strigg – Jockey
- Matrium – Horse
The Downstairs Complex at the track pays homage to these legends and is now a dedicated ‘Legends Room’, displaying the mementos of these greats.
